Gevestigde politieke partijen zijn in de loop der jaren niet populistischer geworden. Bovendien zijn populistische partijen na hun verkiezingssuccessen juist minder populistisch geworden. Er is dan ook geen sprake van een populistische ‘tijdgeest’ in West-Europa. Dit zijn de belangrijkste conclusies uit mijn proefschrift dat ik op 21 maart verdedig aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam.
